Obituary for Thomas Arthur Menzies

Menzies, Thomas Arthur - It is with extreme sadness and deep love that we announce the passing of Thomas Arthur Menzies at his beloved Hastings Farm on April 14, 2024, with cherished family at his side. After a tenacious and courageous six-year battle with cancer, Tom exceeded expectations while facing this journey on his own terms.

Tom leaves behind his beloved wife, Sharlene (Humphries), his adored son, Kolton, as well as Mandy, Tara and Andrew (Amy) Menzies; grandchildren Kayla, Austin, Kendyl, Reece and Beckett Menzies; son of the late Robert (2009) and Vivian Menzies; sisters’ Sharron Parkes (John) and Patricia Logan (Doug), his In-laws the late Kenneth (2024) and Mona Humphries, sisters-in-law Denise (Jose Luis ) Humphries, Elaine (John) Milne. Tom will be fondly remembered by his many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews, cousins, many friends and acquaintances. Missing him greatly is his four-legged friend, Mila.

Tom was born in Peterborough, the third child of the late Robert and Vivan Menzies. He proudly retired from General Motors in the paint division after 35 years. After retirement, farming wasn’t enough, Tom missed the comradery and social interaction. He worked on call as a funeral director’s assistant lending a hand in many funeral homes when required until 2023. In 2016, Tom became a licensed security guard working at many Country Jamborees, Fall Fairs and private functions. Always willing to lend a hand, Tom worked at Pat and Doug’s “Wine By You” store and developed a palate for red wine. He was a member of the Board of Directors for the Trent Valley Cemetery and the Peterborough County Plowmen’s Association.
To know Tom was to appreciate how driven and dedicated he was to his family. He leaves Kolton with much knowledge and experience in the outdoors, fishing, hunting, camping, cutting wood, snowmobiling and four wheeling. As a jack of all trades, Tom could repair any carpentry or construction need and fix motors of all sizes! He loved tinkering with his toys and proudly showed them to all. One of Tom’s passions was watching hockey games, especially his favorite team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. It sure would be a dilemma if the hockey game fell at the same time as one of his other favourite past times, listening to country classic music or the Marty Stewart show. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brett Funeral Chapels - Hastings.
Private interment as per Tom’s wishes.
A Celebration of Life for Tom and his father-In-Law, Kenneth Humphries will be held at the Hastings Civic Centre, on Thursday May 16, 2024, from 1pm to 4:00pm with words of honour at 2:00pm.
A very special thank you is extended to Dr. Kloppenburg and the palliative care team, the many physicians involved with Tom’s care in the Cancer Clinic at both PRHC and Lakeridge Health Oshawa and to the wonderful staff at Hospice Peterborough.
In memory of Tom, donations may be made to Hospice Peterborough, Hospice Norwood or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by family. Online condolences may be made at www.brettfuneralchapels.com.

Poem of Life
Life is but a stopping place
A pause in what’s to be,
A resting place along the road,
To sweet eternity.
We all have different journeys,
Different paths along the way,
We all were meant to learn some things,
But never meant to stay…..
Our destination is a place,
Far greater than we know.
For some the journey’s quicker,
For some the journey’s slow
And when the journey finally ends,
We’ll claim a great reward,
And find an everlasting peace,
Together with the Lord.
