Obituary for Meredith Cataffo (Ward)

Meredith Ward Cataffo
Gone to glory, a true woman of faith, Meredith Ward Cataffo on May 8, 2021 in Havelock, Ontario surrounded by love at home.
Meredith was born in Fair Bluff, North Carolina on Dec. 26, 1925 to Irvin and Rossie Floyd Ward. She was one of 13 children with 5 sisters and 7 brothers. They were a hardworking farm family. She graduated from Cerro Gordo H.S. where she was a drum majorette and Magnolia Queen.
She met David Cataffo, a handsome Marine, at a New Year’s Eve dance at Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base, N.C. They were married on Aug. 7, 1948 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Rosedale, NY. They were blessed with a marriage of 72 years. She worked as a telephone operator until beginning their family. They moved to Bellmore, Long Island, NY in 1958 and raised four children. She was a wonderful homemaker and gardener and was active in Girl Scouts and her church. She will be remembered for her perfect apple pie; an art she passed along to the next generation.
Mickey loved returning to her beloved North Carolina to find shells on the beach and spend time with family on The Farm. We are certain she is enjoying butterbeans, hush puppies and fried chicken in heaven.
In addition to her husband David, she is survived by her daughters Catherine Cataffo, Susan Cataffo-Heiland (Scott) and Dana Rollwage (Douglas). She is predeceased by her daughter Judith Aine Havrilla (Alfred) and grandson Jesse.
She is also survived by a brother George Douglas Ward, four sister-in-laws Faye Ward, Etta Ward, Maria Ward and Laura Bard and the richness of an extended family.
She has nine grandchildren; Jennifer, Amanda (Keith), Annabelle (Nestor), Melissa (Brian), Dameon (Rachel), Liam (Anna), Hannah (Rory) and Jacob (Ellen). She has four great- grandchildren; Ainsley, Rohan, Sage and Aoife. She was so very proud of all of them and they brought her great joy.
Heartfelt thanks to Monica, Carol and Janine for their supportive care and kindness.
Due to COVID restrictions a private graveside service will be held in the Marmora Common Cemetery with a celebration of her life at a later date.
God is good-all the time. Mom always said, “It’s a Grand New Day!”
