Eichner, Karl William Joseph
After 71 years of boundless energy and glowing good health, Karl passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Saturday, July 9th in the loving arms of his wife and soul-mate Janice (Denike) due to complications of a bacterial infection. He is also survived by his aunt and uncle, Angela (Coid) and George McWhirter of Vancouver, BC, first cousins Grania Bridal, Liam McWhirter, Wanda Grzegorczyk and Mark Grzegorczyk and nephews Rob and Jeff Denike as well as a large family of beloved friends he built and nurtured here and abroad over decades.
Born in Bangor, Northern Ireland and raised in London, England, Karl served a three-year commission in the British Army before emigrating to Canada, graduating from Carleton University in Ottawa and embarking on a long career in public and media relations as communications advisor to Canadian Government cabinet ministers. He later moved to Toronto to join Canada News-Wire and after a subsequent few years at Grant and DeNike Advertising, launched Karl Eichner & Associates Communications, specializing in trade and consumer shows.
Karl was a fun-loving optimist, keen student of history and avid traveler whose fondest hope was that he and Janice could make up for time lost to the pandemic with many more adventures, including frequent trips “home” to Ireland and England where his roots and friendships were deep. He embraced country living at the home he and Janice built on the water in Trent Hills, Ontario and at their cottage in Ashford Hollow, New York and was happiest when he had a long list of outdoor chores. His loss is devastating for loved ones but he leaves a legacy of love and positive energy that will be ours forever.
A celebration of life will take place in the future but for now, please raise a glass of good whisky to a beloved husband, nephew, cousin, uncle and friend. If you’re so inclined, a donation in his memory to Campbellford Memorial Hospital or an animal charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
