Obituary for Charlie Carter

CARTER, Charles Thomas (2020.10.16). Charlie passed away peacefully after a sudden decline. The first child of Margaret Lillian Carter and Frederick Charles Carter, Charlie was born in Toronto in the High Park area on December 4, 1952. He was an extremely active boy – his mother left him unattended (once) for a few minutes as a 2 year old, and found him going around the dining room by hanging from the plate rail 6 feet off the floor. Exactly how he got up there, she never figured out. Charlie grew into a very confident, gregarious, talented, and highly intelligent young man. By his early 20s, he was a skilled pilot with multiple certifications, a talented musician (cello and piano), an exceptional athlete (provincial record holder in swimming), and excelling at school. He had a combination of abilities, confidence, and unwavering clarity in his goals that was truly remarkable. Very unfortunately, a few weeks after graduating at the top of his class in Medicine at the University of Toronto at age 23, he was involved in a horrible car crash that had massive impact on several families. Comatose for 3 years, he eventually regained consciousness but he remained an invalid with severe brain injury and physical disabilities. His parents attended to him daily for decades, and pursued every opportunity for therapy. When they retired, they took him home and involved him in every family function for as long as possible, including extended trips, boat rides, and other entertainments. However, his physical condition gradually deteriorated and he then spent many years at Fairhaven Nursing Home in Peterborough. Our family wishes to extend our most sincere appreciation to everyone at Fairhaven. He was very well looked after and carefully attended; he lived there with as much comfort and care as possible, and the staff clearly enjoyed having Charlie as a resident. We are very thankful that he was so well looked after for so long. Charlie is survived by his siblings Ron (Ludy), Margaret, and Les (Eileen), nieces, nephews, and their children. Interment will be private but we will have a family celebration when circumstances permit. If desired, donations to either the Fairhaven Foundation in Peterborough, or to the Kids Help Line, would be welcome.
