Bessie Mildred Scriver born Thursday, July 1st, 1926, passed away with family by her side on Friday April 12th to join her beloved husband of 82 years, the late Robert Henry (Bob) Scriver (1988).
Bessie (Bess), mother of the late Robert D. (Laura) (Ardythe), the late Darryl (Karen), Michael (Bev) and Melanie Rose. Proud Gramma/Nana of Melissa (Arjun) Chatterjee, Jason Scriver, Christine Scriver, Cindy Scriver, Cory Scriver, Mike (Jenny) Scriver, Brad Baxter (Tammy) the late Elizabeth Baxter (2010), Melana (Tristen) Sagriff, and Jenna Rose (Andrew). Cherished Great Nana to 18 beautiful great grandchildren & 2 great, great grandchildren.
Predeceased by her parents Fred and Elsie Turner and 9 of her 10 siblings: leaving behind her beloved youngest sister Marina. Bessie will be lovingly remembered by her many nieces and nephew, cousins, & many friends who she has touched the lives of in her 97 years.
Born in Stirling Ont, the Turner family moved to Hastings where she spent the majority of her lifetime, especially the many years in the home her & Bob built on Norwood Rd. Bessie & Bob were married October 19, 1942, & spent 47 memorable years together before Dad passed July 24, 1988. Bob was her lifelong love, and every year though he was gone, Bessie celebrated their anniversary by lighting a candle and having a quiet drink to celebrate their love.
Bessie had a heart of gold, loved her children and their children unrelentingly, and spent her life putting others before herself including the many volunteer organizations she was involved in. Hastings United Church, (Elder, School Teacher, Life member UCW), Original & Life member to Ladies Auxilliary to Br#106 Hastings till its folding 55+ yrs later, member of Legion Br. 106 for 38 yrs, Life member Hastings Seniors, Life member of Trent Valley Cemetary Bd, to name a few. She was a babysitter for many children through the years, especially her grandchildren & great grandchildren. She drove friends and family to appointments, to church, many drives around the country and loved to stop and have a meal along the way. She was a very supportive soul who never grimaced at any request but opened her arms and her heart to help.
Sports was a great joy in her life, married to a husband that refereed hockey, umpired baseball and one of the founders of Minor Sports in Hastings for over 40+ yrs, how could it not be! Bessie also was an avid curler & loved to talk about the many adventures she had with her teammates in bonspiels out of town. Bessie was a diehard Leafs & Jays fan and still enjoyed & cursed them as she watched her TV. Bessie loved watching any sport in the last few decades that would keep her entertained.
And we certainly must share Bessie’s great love for Euchre. A very savvy player, with lots of “tricks up her sleeve”! My how she never turned down a chance to play. A group of 8 ladies that played once a week at each other’s home for well over 60 yrs, the legion, at Seniors around the area of Hastings, friends, family, oh how the cards would fly!
Bessie enjoyed life to its fullest, and always had that beautiful smile, warm Hello and caressing hug.
