We were deeply saddened to hear of David's passing. David and Mary Lou were our close friends for many years. Margaret still takes credit for introducing them while they worked together at MNR's Maple district. David and I worked together at the Fish and Wildlife Branch, often on difficult and seemingly unsolvable issues. His great wisdom, humour and wit would always get us through them. His success in indigenous relationships was due to his integrity and the great respect he demonstrated. Our deepest condolences to Sarah, Ryan, his family and his many close friends. May time and our fond memories help to cope with his loss.

Many years ago, on my first visit to David and Mary Lou’s house in Peterborough, David made it memorable. He started by asking if I like Scotch, then pouring me about 10oz straight of debatable quality “scotch” in a glass and gleefully watching me have a “manly” struggle every sip for a couple of hours. At one point I excused myself to use the washroom, which he, unbeknownst to Sarah and I, had redecorated with large childhood framed photos of Sarah as a dancer in various costumes. Cute photos for sure, but they seemed odd to be in a washroom I thought. I didn’t know at first this Scotch and washroom decoration job was just a fun initiation of me and a good natured tease on Sarah. David loved his morning newspapers, his tea, world travel, chatting about world events and politics, but it’s his sense of humour and having a simple friendly laugh at anytime over anything with anyone is how I will always remember David.

I had the great pleasure and privilege of working for David from June of 2014 until his retirement in 2016. He was a wonderful Manager and mentor, and I was very saddened to learn of David's sudden passing. I have great memories of his quick wit and sense of humour, his fun stories (especially of travel adventures and his beloved grandchildren), and above all his gentle kindness. He was such a wealth of knowledge and experience and I learned so much from him about the history of our Ministry and our important relationships with Indigenous communities. Thinking of his family and close friends at this difficult time, and hoping that you can find peace and comfort in all your great memories.
